I believe it is finally ready for general use. There are still bugs, but they seem to be rare and don't seem to be catastrophic. Still, MacMiNT should be used at your own risk. MacMiNT is a preemptive multitasking OS that runs as a process under the Mac OS. It is a port of MiNT 0.95 from the Atari ST. MiNT extends the Atari OS to support many UNIX like features. Many UNIX tools have been ported to MiNT, including gcc (v2.4.5), make, tcsh, and emacs. MacMiNT should be able to run on anything from a MacPlus with 2M ram and 3M disk space, on up to a Quadra with a ton of ram and a ton of disk space. But, I wouldn't bother with anything less than a MacII with 8M ram and 15M disk space. The default installation requires 5M free ram and 12M free disk space. If you don't use the default installation you could probably get away with a lot less ram and a lot less disk space. There is little to no documentation on MacMiNT. To use MacMiNT you should already be familiar with UNIX, or you should be prepared to do a lot of searching for documentation. MacMiNT is available at: suniams1.statistik.tu-muenchen.de in /pub/mac/MacMiNT/MacMiNT.13October93, nic.switch.ch in /software/mac/src/macmint, and archive.cis.ohio-state.edu in /pub/mac-unix/macmint. The distribution contains only the minimum files needed to get started. Several other packages will have to be retrieved from the network before doing a full installation. I had found the Product code in an older listing of the Hi Ed List, and wrote it down, figuring that the worst thing that could happen was that the price would go down (was listed at ~$450.00). Please forgive my niavete about this sort of thing - any references to FAQs that I should be reading would be much appreciated. WHAT WE ARE: We are a small, non-profit community center located in a poor, inner-city neighborhood in Durham, NC. We provide educational and recreational opportunities to disadvantaged youth, including after-school activities, job training, drug/pregnancy counseling, etc. We have a small paid staff in a small facility and, of course, almost no money. WHAT WE WANT: We would like to have a Mac-based cluster of computers for the kids to use. They would be using educational/recreational software, typing programs and other software for job skills, etc. Additionally, we want to use a Mac to run the everyday business of the center. WHAT WE HAVE: We have a small grant which will fund the purchase of a single respectable desk-top setup - something like a Centris 610 and laser printer. We intend for this to be primarily used by adults for business stuff. Additionally, we have 2 Mac Pluses (one with hard disk), 2 512K's, and an Imagewriter. These items have come as donations and we anticipate more of the same. (This is an advertisement, by the way: If you know of any old Mac systems or peripherals that can be donated to a worthwhile 501c-3 tax deductable charity, PLEASE get in touch!). WHAT I WANT TO KNOW: Is there an inexpensive and worthwhile way to take advantage of the higher-end Mac (and laser printer) to provide the kids with the best resources and performance on the lower-end macs? Is it worth setting up an AppleTalk (or other) network? Specifically: - What is the minimum system/ram/hard disk configuration for the "terminals"? - What is the optimum configuration for the "server"? - Can the server provide processing power as well as file sharing? - Is there cheap software/hardware other than Apple Talk? (no, we can't afford ethernet) - Any ideas for sources of donated macs or small hard disks? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas. Don't know if this might help. I had a similar problem with two IBM 9370 mainframes wired into the Internet. It seems that the size of the packets you are sending out is too big. When you do a ping or other transmission activity that only results in a small packet, it gets thru without problems, but when the packets grow bigger (as in a TELNET or FTP transaction), these get chopped up and transmission hangs with both hosts madly retransmitting the mangled packet. The problem stems in that one end sends packets larger than the other can process, and the other cannot or will not indicate the fact. Dunno if InterSLIP can be adjusted for this, but I solved the problem with my 9370's by reducing the packet size on the configuration file (using IBM's FAL). If you can play with this, do a trial-and-error till you obtain the maximum packet size the link will let you get away with, so you can maximize link throughput. Keywords like MTU, RWIN, MAXSEG and others come to mind. Now that I remember, I had the same gremlin pop up when I set up an Arcnet-Ethernet IP bridge for our Novell'ers, using Phil Karn's NOS. There, the maximum packet size turned out to be 340 bytes or so, whereas on the 9370's it was 560'ish. Later on, a cisco upgrade was installed and the 9370's were finally able to pump out at 1,500. As a profesional translator and owner of a translation company, I was curious. So I phoned the vendor (Globalink) and received a fax containing some information, parts of which are quoted below: "Power Translator Professional features: - Translation speed of up to 20,000 + words/hour - Bidirectional translations - Bilingual screen option - Bilingual manual - Add-on Subject Dictionaries for technical, industry or profession-specific words and phrases: create your own or buy one ready-made from Globalink - Alternative Translation/Synonym reference feature with pop-up window - Pull-down menu for Alternative Translations/Synonyms from dictionary to edit on the translation screen - Compatible with most popular OCR software and virtually all scanners - User-modifiable general dictionaries of over 250,000+ words - Single word and semantic unit dictionaries - Convenient User Dictionary allows recording of user modifications - Selection of General Dictionary or Subject Dictionary from dictionary update screen or translation screen - Access any word processor from menu - Accepts text file from any word processor - Rapid, simplified dictionary update procedure, with improved interface - Automatic morphological inflection in dictionary update - Automatic Possible Part of Speech feature - Multiple translations based on part of speech (noun/verb/adjective/adverb), further enhanced with multiple (subject Dictionary) capability - On-screen linking and display of related terms - Variable translation of prepositions - Automatic inflection of semantic units (singular to plural, infinitive to conjugated form) - Preferred translation selection option - Idiomatic expressions in Semantic Unit Dictionary - Alphabetical browsing - Interactive or batch translation modes - Batch mode translation options including editor and full text modes - On-screen editing of source of target text - Automatic verb conjugation - Automatic pluralization - Flagging and reporting of unfound words/phrase for easy dictionary update - Increased speed of translation with longer texts - Suspend translation feature to allow words or phrases to remain untranslated (e.g., proper names, addresses, trademarks, etc.) - Text entry of foreign characters from English keyboard or appropriate foreign keyboard." The above is verbatim from the vendor fax, which also includes claims that thousands of Unix, OS/2 and DOS users around the world are happy with the product. Does anyone out there know one such user? By the way, it seems that this software was originally designed for use by the military --why would an "Infantry" (sic) dictionary be already compiled and listed among available dictionaries? Examples of the capabilities of the program are included. I quote them to give native speakers an opportunity to appraise them: "French to English: Veulliez nous crediter du montant indique sur le releve ci-joint./Please credit us the amount indicated on the statement enclosed. English to French: We enclose our quarterly bulletin listing our recent accomplishments./Vous trouverez ci-inclus notre bulletin trimestriel enumerant nos accomplissements recents. English to German: Please make sure that the goods arrive in good condition and on time./Stellen Sie bitte sicher, dass die Guter in gutem Zustand und punktlich ankommen. German to English: Sie konnen sich auf die prompte und sorgfaltige Ausfuhrung [1 wd. illegible] Auftrags verlassen./You-They can rely on the prompt and careful completion of your order. English to Spanish: Please send the goods in accordance with the enclosed instructions./Por favor enviar las mercaderias segun las instrucciones adjuntadas. Spanish to English: La maquina que usted fabrica en la fabrica cumple el requerimiento./The machine that you manufacture in the factory fulfills the requirement." Etc. Although I may be wrong, from these examples it would appear that the software is intended to handle workaday material, but not anything more complicated than billing or business letters. Now, the business of translation is to render meaning, not words, and it is not clear to me that this is accomplished. Although the claims are attractive, they of course must be taken with a pinch --or perhaps a lot-- of salt. The US$1,195 price tag (which includes two "Subject Dictionaries" of your choice) is steep for something which may not be that useful. An appraisal from an actual user might help shed some light, and I invite fellow netters to post (or e-mail to me) anything they find on the subject. Thing is, we *need* Excel so we dumped SpeedyFinder7 which is a bit of a pity as two of its features are especially good: - eliminating the finder's rename delay - faster network copying - substituting default programs for opening TEXT and PICT and even other file types (ex:setting Word to load when you double-click a MacWrite file. I get this same message with all applications closed, even after restart. Even after disabling all my extentions. I was able to share my printer once, the first time I ever tried it, but the next time I started up my computer I had this problem. After I reinstalled the printer software, I was able to share the printer but the next time I turned on my computer the problem returned. So if I reinstall the printer software each time I use my computer, it will work, but that's not any fun. I guess this is a problem with the printer software since it hasn't been updated since the Stylewriter II first came out. Or is there an update of the Stylewriter driver that I don't know about? I would appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thank you in advance. Ben Squire ------------------------------------------------------------- Since then, I found a solution. First I upgraded my printer driver to StyleWriterII v1.2. This did not solve my sharing problem. Then I upgraded to PrinterShare 1.1. This solved my problem. If there are even more recent versions of either of these, I would like to know. Please E-mail me or send me a copy. I was rather miffed that the new printer driver wasn't on the Apple FTP server. What's up with that? Thanks to all those who mailed in suggestions. I hope this information will be able to help someone in the pursuit printer sharing. I just got a _lot_ of almost-plain-text ascii material on CD-ROM that I would like to read. I could print some of it out, but given that the text consists of a half-dozen science fiction novels and related materials, printing becomes a time consuming and expensive proposition. What I need is a simple pager program, like 'more', 'most' and 'less' on UNIX systems. While there are plenty of fine programs for _editing_ text, there are none (that I know of) for simply viewing and reading text. Optimally, the pager/viewer would have a few useful features: - A user-defined "page key" that advances the text exactly one page forward. When reading a large amount of material, there's no reason to take the time or effort to use the mouse. - User-settable font and style (so text can be set to large & bold for easy viewing). - Optionally, it should be able to interpret the standard ASCII printer control characters... newpage (^L), backspace (^H), etc the way 'less' does. - Optionally, it should also automatically recognize and properly format non-Mac newline characters, ^J for UNIX and ^J^M for DOS. - An RTF interpreter would be nice too... but perhaps I ask for too much :-) Does such a beast exist? If so, just tell me about it an I'll shut up :-) I will, of course, forward my findings to the net. I am a current user of Word 5.1, and would like to hear from users of WP 3.0, especially former MS-Word users. My primary questions with WP 3.0 are as follows: How does it perform? Word, as I have commented here before, is a sloth. If WP is a decent performer, I would consider switching for this reason alone. Is it file format compatible with the Windows and DOS versions of WordPerfect? Word has always made this claim, but has always fallen down in this regard. What I think Andy is talking about is using the Frame command (known in Word 4 as Postion). Usually, when you frame a paragraph in Word (Insert/Frame), Word places a "frame" around the paragraph, and then you can use Print Preview to drag the frame about or adjust the frame using Format/Frame.The framed paragraph moves along with the frame as you move the frame around. Got that? :-) Word wraps non-framed text around framed paragraphs, and this (though clumsy) works reasonably well for, say, wacking a graphic in the middle of the page and having text wrap around it. You can position multiple frames so that their locations overlap. Frames cannot wrap around one another, so - in theory - they should overlap. In practice, Word gives mixed and sometimes inexplicable results when you overlap frames. I certainly wouldn't count on it working in any sort of time-sensitive situation. So, if you want text to overlap some item in Word (4 or 5), you can stick the item in the header and set the top margin (Format/Document) to an exact measurement (you have to set it to exact so that the header doesn't push the text down too far). In Word 5, you can choose exact from a popdown menu; in Word 4, you enter a negative number in the top margin box, say -1 for "exactly one inch." You can then stick postscript code in the header to print a largish, grayed out DRAFT (or whatever text you desire) or you can put a graphic (or a large, bordered, table cell to make a full-page border) or what have you in the header. Word (like most Mac programs :-)) can't do display PostScript, so if you use the PostScript code method - as Andy notes - you can't see the result of the code until you print to a PostScript printer. If you use non-PostScript code - a graphic of some sort perhaps - you are likely to see a decent representation in Print Preview, though not normal or page layout view. Conclusion? For Andy (or anyone like Andy) to solve the problem, you can either: 1. Use a different program... 2. Consider making a graphic having the word DRAFT and placing that in the header. 3. Experiment with frames, but prepare for frustration. Finally, if anyone does know of a neat way to make the frames behave as Andy describes, I'd love to know about it.
